Overview:   

The Nuclear Safety & Experiment Analysis Section within the Research Reactors Division (RRD) within the Neutron Sciences Directorate is seeking a mid-career Nuclear Safety Analyst to support the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). You will be a member of the Nuclear Safety & Reactor Analysis Group and provide analytical support for the safe, reliable operation of the HFIR and the adjacent Cold Source facility.   

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Preparation and maintenance of the HFIR saftey basis documents, including the HFIR Safety Analysis Report (SAR), Cold Neutron Source Documented Safety Analysis (CS DSA), HFIR Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), fuel shipping container Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARP), and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA). 

  • Perform analysis, testing, and research as necessary to support the HFIR beryllium reflector replacement and reactor pressure vessel replacement projects. 

  • Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR Part 830 Subparts A and B, affecting reactor and facility safety, through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management System (SBMS) and RRD procedures. 

  • Application of the Unreviewed Safety Question process per ORNL SBMS and RRD procedure directly to the HFIR and Cold Source Facility.    

  • Participate in periodic meetings and plant health activities.  Provide reviews, advice, and recommendations both to RRD management and to staff issues as they develop.  Participate in long range planning regarding upgrades, improvements, and maintenance consistent with RRD and ORNL management requests.     

  • Adherence to the rules and regulations that govern the operation of a DOE nuclear facility such as HFIR. 

  • Perform research and/or testing needed to validate safety analysis assumptions or controls. 

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • B.S. degree in nuclear engineering, or similar engineering or scientific discipline.   

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering or safety analysis, and at least 1 year of nuclear facility experience. 

  • Organized, detail-oriented and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture. 

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience working in a team environment, with collaboration at all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds both inside and outside the organization. 

  • Demonstrated record of customer-oriented, collaborative work ethic. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.  

  • Background in modeling, simulation, and analysis techniques utilizing reactor physics, multiphysics, thermal hydraulics, and/or severe accident codes, such as MCNP, SCALE, COMSOL, RELAP5, MACCS, MELCOR. 

  • Previous experience with the Unreviewed Safety Question process or 10 CFR 50.59. 

  • Strong analytical background in heat transfer, fluid flow, and thermodynamics. 

  • Experience at a commercial, research, or naval reactor.   

  • Experience with DOE-STD-3009 and/or Regulatory Guide 1.70.   

 

Special Requirements: 

L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
