We invite applications for the position of Operations Support staff residing within the ORNL, Radio Frequency (RF) Communications and Intelligent Systems Group in the Electrical and Electronics Systems Research Division (EESRD). This position will be in direct operational support of a cross-functional team that has responsibility for operational and research activities pertaining to security of the electric grid along with numerous other research activities. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide direct support to operations and research team members through operation and management of laboratory and computing equipment, ensuring its efficient and effective operation.  This work will require frequent interaction with engineers, scientists, and technicians conducting both operations and research efforts for the national electric power grid and other critical infrastructure.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:


Duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Visual display management and operation using multiple screens and products
  • Setup, maintainenance and operation of various applicable laboratory equipment; examples include Glow-forge and Mark-forge printing equipment, video display walls, SMARTboards, and other advanced display, office, and production equipment as applicable
  • Management of new and existing material assets for various research programs including procurement, shipment, receipt and final placement for operational use, as well as coordination efforts on the current status of project inventory
  • Interaction with various internal ORNL organizations along with external organizations to include universities, government, electrical utilities, vendors, and other national laboratories
    • Participation in professional development opportunities as requested to enhance the team’s overall diverse skill sets in support to programs





  • Bachelor’s (preferred) or Associate degree (required) with 2-4 years relevant experience
  • Strong technical aptitude to quickly learn new hardware and software applications
    • Basic knowledge of security practices
    • Basic knowledge in operational support to scientific, research operations and the generation of administrative communication products
  • Able to work under supervision within a high-tempo, team environment
  • Able to handle routine and urgent tasking while troubleshooting issues that may arise
  • Exceptionally strong time management skills


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
