We are seeking a Senior Staff Researcher who will focus on polymer/soft matter characterization fundamental polymer physics, polymer/soft matter dynamics using neutron scattering. This position resides in the Soft Matter and Membranes Group in the Separation and Polymer Chemistry Section of the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


As part of our research team, you will be leading  fundamental research focused on polymer/soft matter dynamics using primarily neutron scattering techniques. Specific topics include dynamics of polymers with reversible (dynamic) bonds, ion and molecular transport in polymers and liquids, kinetics of aging and transitions between metastable states. The candidate is expected to lead research of several postdocs and students, to develop his/her own program, and to raise significant funding to support his/her team. The candidate is also expected to be involved with other projects in the Soft Matter and Membranes group.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead fundamental studies of polymer/soft matter dynamics with use of neutron scattering
  • Develop new directions of fundamental and applied research in polymer/soft matter based field
  • Lead research and mentor several postdocs and students
  • Raise sufficient funding to support the team
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D in Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or other closely realted field  with a minimum of 6 years of experience
  • Experience in studies of polymer/soft matter dynamics using neutron scattering.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and expertise in at least one of the following techniques: dielectric spectroscopy, rheology, light scattering
  • Knowledge and expertise in mechanical and viscoelastic characterization of polymers, composites and polymer solutions
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Participate creatively in solving problems and refining projects directions
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
