The Biological and Nanoscale Systems Group (BNSG) focuses on the characterization, integration and adaptation of natural and synthetic systems across multiple length scales.  A continuing emphasis is to characterize and understand how natural systems are organized at the nanoscale and how this organization contributes to biological function.  To support this aim, an interdisciplinary group focuses on technology development with specific interest in biological imaging, biocompatible micro- and nanofabrication techniques, and high throughput screening technologies.


The BNSG is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to support interdisciplinary efforts within the group.  Candidates with demonstrated expertise in microfluidics, related control systems, micro- and nanofabrication as well as imaging and image analysis techniques will be prioritized.  Further, capabilities related to one or more of the following areas is desirable: microbial physiology, micro- and molecular biology, and plant-microbe interactions.  Ideal candidates will have demonstrated the application of micro/nanoscale tools to the characterization of microbial systems.


The postdoctoral researcher will support interdisciplinary research efforts within the Biological and Nanoscale Systems Group.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Explore and develop new micro- and nanofabrication techniques that facilitate measurements and understanding of plant and microbial systems in a self-directed manner.
  • Develop and apply hardware and software based control systems for interfacing to microfluidic devices.
  • Integrate various imaging systems and chemical imaging approaches with microfluidic platforms for real time measurement of complex biological systems along with developing related image collection and analysis techniques.
  • Work with a diverse team of scientists seeking both to advance scientific understanding of plant-microbe interfaces and new technologies for measuring these systems at the molecular and cellular scales. 
  • Interface directly with internal and external partners in various disciplines to utilize a systems-biology approach for advancing plant-microbe interface research.
  • Present research results at national scientific meetings.
  • Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Participate in project planning and execution.
  • Work with staff to develop new proposals.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.


Qualifications Required

Ph.D. in a physical science or engineering or a related scientific discipline with demonstrated experience and expertise in one of the following research areas: microfluidics, molecular and cellular imaging, microbial physiology, or molecular biology.


Qualifications Preferred

Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: microfluidics, micro- and nanofabrication, chemical imaging, image analysis, microbial physiology, micro- and molecular biology, plant-microbe interactions, optical, electron, and atomic force microscopy.  Priority will be given to candidates that have demonstrated the application of micro/nanoscale tools to the characterization of microbial systems.

This position is a temporary, full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months.
