Overview: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on characterization/physics of polymers, polymer and liquid electrolytesThis position resides in the Soft Materials Group, Separations and Polymer Chemistry Section, Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), with potential collaboration with Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).


The research will be focused on characterization of conductivity, dynamics and viscoelastic properties of various electrolytes in bulk and confinement, with the major goal of revealing mechanisms controlling ion and molecular transport in liquids and polymers. The research will involve Broadband Dielectric or Impedance spectroscopy, rheology, light and neutron scattering techniques. This research will be complemented by collaborations and interactions with researchers doing synthesis and computational/simulations studies.


Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform dielectric and rheological measurements of various electrolytes and polymers
  • Study ion and charge dynamics, and mechanisms of ion and molecular transport in liquids and polymers using calorimetry, light and neutron scattering techniques, and gas permeability and solubility measurements
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics or closely related fields completed in the last 5 years
  • Experience with either rheology, dielectric spectroscopy, or light and neutron scattering.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in polymer science, especially with expertise in rheology and dielectric spectroscopy, or neutron scattering.
  • Knowledge and expertise in neutron, light and X-ray scattering
  • Knowledge and expertise in polymer morphology and their characterization techniques such as SAXS and TEM
  • Expertise in rheological and dielectric measurements
  • Expertise in studying transport of ions and molecules in polymers
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs


Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
