Overview:  The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Initiative at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral candidate in the fields of AI and machine learning (ML) with expertise in robust AI/ML, uncertainty quantification (UQ) and probabilistic machine learning.  The successful candidate will become part of ORNL AI team conducting research in AI and its applications in a wide range of scientific and engineering application areas. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with the AI researchers to develop novel machine learning methods and models in broad areas including UQ, probabilistic machine learning or robust AI/ML.
  • Develop computationally efficient and scalable algorithms, including the scaling of algorithms and HPC implementations.
  • Delivery and support of mathematical, statistical, and computational technologies for various scientific and engineering disciplines and applications.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of computational and domain scientists, both within the AI initiative and across ORNL.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in mathematics, computer/computational sciences, statistics, computer engineering or a related field within the last five years.
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strongly motivated to perform and publish leading edge research.
  • Collaborative research capabilities as demonstrated by existing peer reviewed publications and technical proposals.
  • Knowledge in general AI topics and computational statistics
  • Knowledge in technical areas such as UQ (e.g., parametric-, non-parametric Bayesian data analysis), probabilistic machine learning and/or robust ML.
  • Experience with data analysis for AI packages.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of scalable algorithms on HPC architectures.
  • Research experience in foundational AI/ML methods.
  • Experience in high-performance computing (HPC), particularly as applied to AI/ML algorithms and probabilistic models.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Information:  Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
