Postdoctoral Research Associate - Atomic-Scale Simulation

Date: Jun 4, 2021

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 5974

Overview:

The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding applications for a postdoctoral research associate to simulate mineral nucleation and aggregation reactions using atomic-scale and/or coarse-grained molecular simulations. As a postdoc, you will utilize high performance computing and rare event methods to work with a team of scientists in the CSD to model chemical reactions important for mineral nucleation, growth and oriented aggregation processes.  That mechanistic information will be incorporated into process-based models that can describe rates and locales of precipitation measured by experimentalists. The position resides in the Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities

            •
  • Conduct independent research using atomic-scale simulation with rare event approaches to understand geochemical precipitation reactions in aqueous solution and at mineral-water interfaces
  • Collaborate with ORNL researchers on the design and execution of experiments to measure the effects of complex aqueous solutions on mineral nucleation and growth
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physical Sciences, such as Geochemistry, Chemistry, Geology, Materials Science, or related disciplines completed within the last 5 years
  • Strong background in atomic-scale simulation or coarse-graining methods

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using rare event methods (metadynamics, umbrella sampling, replica exchange, blue moon ensemble, etc.)
  • Experience with simulating mineral reactions in aqueous solutions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.

Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.  Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov.  Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
