Overview

The Center for Molecular Biophysics (https://cmb.ornl.gov/) within the Biosciences Division (https://www.ornl.gov/division/bsd) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks one postdoctoral researcher to support a project aimed optimizing nanocellulose composite materials, while utilizing molecular simulations and high performance computing (HPC). This project is part of a large multidisciplinary effort to develop Advanced Manufacturing for forest-based fiber-reinforced polymer composites.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

In this position, you will:

  • Conduct molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, atomistic and coarse-grained, of cellulose nanofibers in a polymer matrix.
  • Model surface modifications of cellulose and how they affect the interaction with the polymer matrix.
  • Work closely with experimental collaborators to validate the simulation findings and interpret experimental results.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion.

Basic Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biophysics, engineering or a related field is required.
  • Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Simulation of cellulose nanofibers or polymers.
  • Prior knowledge and demonstrated expertise in molecular dynamics simulations
  • Experience in both atomistic and coarse grained simulations.
  • Experience with machine learning approaches as applied to MD simulations is desirable.
