Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the The Building Equipment Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office, Geothermal Technology Office, and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct, coordinate, and report complex research assignments related to advanced heat pumps, e.g. cold climate heat pumps, integrated heat pumps, and thermal enery storage heat pumps
  • Support vapor compression system modelling and analyses for new refrigerants having lower global warming potentials
  • Develop experimental setups, problem-solving, conducting experimental campaigns, performing thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyzing results, and preparing technical documents and research publications
  • Interact and collaborate with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in thermodynamic system and component modeling
  • Experience in design and operation of experimental thermal/fluid systems
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer
  • Experience in the design of experiments, and knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC)
  • Experience with objective-oriented programming, e.g. C++, python, .Net language
  • Experience in developing new ideas and proposal writing is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
