Purpose

The Building Equipment Research Group in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Post-Doctoral researcher position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency and electric grid integration.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to energy conversion systems including:

 

  1. Fundamental and applied aspects of phase change materials (including paraffins, salt hydrates, fatty alcohols, and others)
  2. Modeling of energy systems including buildings, vapor compression systems, interactions with the electric grid, phase change thermal energy storage, and sensible thermal energy storage
  3. Heat exchanger design and performance evaluation

 

The candidate will be involved in developing experimental setups, conducting experimental campaigns, performing thermodynamic analysis and system modeling, analyzing results, and preparing technical reports, research publications in journals and conferences, and presenting research results to sponsors and other audiences. The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

 

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. The candidate should possess the necessary background and experience in (a) development and/or analysis of phase change materials, (b) thermodynamic cycle modeling, (c) experience with the design and operation of experimental thermal/fluid systems, design of experiments, and knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation, and (d) knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer. Experience with heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) is a plus. Experience with issues pertaining to the electric grid (transactive controls, demand response measures, load shifting, etc.) is a strong plus. Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are required. Finally, the successful candidate should have a proven publication/patent record and evidence of effective project management skills.

 

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

 

Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
