The Computational and Predictive Biology Group in the Biosciences Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position. Under general supervision, the incumbent will conduct research within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team collaborating on medium to large, usually multi-institutional research projects studying biological processes related to human, plant & microbial systems.


The Biosciences Division at ORNL is focused on advancing science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with their environment at all scales. The Division has expertise and special facilities in genomics, computational biology, microbiology, microbial ecology, biophysics and structural biology, and plant sciences. The Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Group is an interdisciplinary group that focuses on technology development with specific interests in systems biology, explainable-AI, network analysis, and information flow.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Omics data analysis and integration.
  • Collaborate with researchers at ORNL, other National Laboratories, and external University researchers to manage, integrate, analyze and interpret experimental and other data.
  • Use computational approaches to develop novel hypotheses that can be explored collaboratively with other researchers.
  • Participate in weekly project meetings.
  • Occasional travel to conferences or collaborative visits with other researchers.
  • Publication of scientific results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics needed to credibly accomplish high-quality science.

 Qualifications Required - Basic Qualifications:

  • A recent or upcoming PhD in computational biology, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science or a related quantitative discipline .
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by a strong publication record in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expertise, as measured through first-author publications and/or major conference presentations focused on computational biology.
  • Candidates should have an excellent work ethic, initiative, time management skills, and be well-organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently, publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and collaborate with other team members.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities, and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience.

Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. However applying in advance is encouraged for those interested.


Preferred Qualifications: Expertise and experience in omics data analysis, systems biology, network theory, machine and deep learning, computer programming, high performance computing.
