Postdoctoral Research Associate - Condensed Matter Physics

Apply now »

Date: Nov 21, 2018

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 293

Overview:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in condensed-matter physics to advance understanding of unconventional superconductivity and magnetism in correlated quantum materials, using applied pressure. This position resides in the Correlated Electron Materials Group, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), within the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The goal of the project is to understand how correlated phenomena in oxide or chalcogenide materials change as a function of applied pressure.  As a postdoc, you will have the opportunity to focus on bulk characterization of single crystals using a variety of techniques such as magnetization, resistance, heat capacity, Hall effect, Seebeck and thermal conductivity, and collaborate with researchers with expertise in theory and modeling, neutrons, microscopy, and spectroscopy. This project will enhance our understanding of quantum materials by applying pressure using piston-cylinder-cells (PCC) or diamond anvil cells (DAC).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
• Physical property characterization of single crystals using a variety of temperature-dependent characterization techniques such as magnetization, resistance, heat capacity, Hall effect, Seebeck and thermal conductivity
• Measurements of resistance and magnetization of materials under applied pressures
• Analyses of quantum materials using X-ray and neutron scattering techniques
• Ability to setup PCC and DAC, in association with QD’s physical property measurements system (PPMS) and magnetic property measurements system (MPMS)

Other responsibilities:
• Present and report research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
• Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related degree within the last five years
• A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals (a minimum of 3), and presentations at scientific conferences

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with magnetic and/or transport measurements as a function of pressure
• Experience with the characterization of superconducting and magnetic materials, using pressure techniques
• Strong knowledge of the recent advances in materials in the condensed matter physics field
• Scientifically motivated and safety conscious
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changes

Special Requirement:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.  Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov.  Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
