Overview: The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the development and application of methods for directed manipulation of materials using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and focused ion beam instrumentation. The specific focus will be to develop methods for controlling and understanding electron/ion beam or probe based tip interactions and processing parameters to permit a mechanistic understanding factors guide the directed fabrication and atomic manipulation of matter. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will contribute to the development of novel scan control and feedback strategies, perform in situ experiments under controlled environmental conditions and as a function of external stimuli and work closely with ORNL scientists on materials characterization, synthesis and theory in order to experimentally validate predictive models. You will also collaborate with artificial intelligence/machine learning experts at ORNL to guide material transformations for automated experiments.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to efforts in advanced microscope control, feedback and automation methods
  • Work as part of a dynamic team conducting research that advances and develops cutting edge characterization capabilities to improve our understanding of nanomaterial material transformations from experiments, theory and simulations.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner



Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Background and hands-on experience in aberration corrected STEM imaging


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with microscope platforms (electron, scanning probe, scanning tunneling, ion beam)
  • Experience with data acquisition and control systems hardware and software such as Labview
  • Background in data analysis and simulations using Python or MatLab
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research shown by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience


Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
