Overview:  We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on high energy nuclear physics research including both experimental data analysis and implementation of detector readout electronics and trigger systems.  This position resides in the High Energy Nuclear Physics Group in the Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


As part of our research team, you will have the opportunity to perform analyses of data collected by the ALICE Experiment at CERN and the opportunity to develop state-of-the-art detector and readout systems for high energy nuclear physics experiments including but not limited to sPHENIX and those for the planned Electron Ion Collider.



Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in the development of detector readout and trigger systems for high energy nuclear physics experiments
  • Pursue research in high energy nuclear physics including experimental data analysis as part of the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider
  • Travel domestically
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or very closely related within the last five years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in high energy nuclear physics experimental data analysis
  • Experience in electronics, especially detector readout electronics
  • Experience in detector data acquisition and measurement
  • Experience using C/C++ and Python programming languages
  • Hands-on problem-solving skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to a scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with good team-work skills in multi-disciplinary collaborations
  • Experience with FPGA programming would be a plus
  • Record of research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals



Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
