Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher who will focus on developing and using a hybrid kinetic-fluid simulation for predictive simulations of tokamak disruption mitigation. The project will focus on determining the efficacy of, and recommending optimizations for, the disruption and runaway electron mitigation system planned for ITER and future reactors.

 

This position resides in the Plasma Theory and Modeling Group in the Fusion Energy Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Implement strategies to couple existing particle-based kinetic and fluid simulation research tools.
  • Deploy the resulting tool on leadership class supercomputers.
  • Validate the hybrid kinetic-fluid model with experimental observations from domestic and international facilities.
  • Perform predictive modeling of the disruption mitigation system planned for ITER.
  • Work with other theorists and experimentalists to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in key peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in plasma simulation with a focus on fluid and/or particle-based kinetic models
  • Proficiency in Matlab, Fortran, C++, and/or other science relevant programming languages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
