Overview: 

The Quantum Information Science Group) in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate in theoretical and experimental quantum information science, especially pertaining to ion trap quantum computing.

 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in quantum communication, quantum computing, and quantum-enhanced sensing.
  • Formulate novel quantum information solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels.
  • Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

 

 Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in physics, optics, electrical engineering, or a directly related field within the past 5 years.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Independent research competence as demonstrated by national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
  • Experimental experience with ion traps, laser cooling and trapping, or atomic molecular optical physics.
  • Experience in experimental quantum information science.

 

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
