Overview:

The Physics Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position in experimental quantum sensing. The division seeks to develop a quantum sensing platform that uses unique transduction mechanisms and quantum entanglement to advance detectors for nuclear and particle physics to new regimes of sensitivity. Quantum sensing work will be carried out in a multidisciplinary environment in which the postdoctoral associate will collaborate with the Quantum Information Science group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division and with members of the recently established Quantum Science Center at ORNL. The work is aimed at addressing fundamental questions in nuclear and particle physics such as the search for dark matter, minute particle properties,  and deviations of the standard forces of interaction. 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in new and ongoing research at the intersection of quantum sensing and high energy physics

• Formulate novel quantum information solutions to fundamental physics problems and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.

• Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national and international audiences at all levels.

• Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

 

Basic Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in physics, optics, electrical engineering, or a field related to the job duties completed within the past five years.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience designing and building quantum sensors

• Experimental experience with at least one of the following: optical sensors, quantum optics, atomic molecular optical physics, magnetometry, optoelectronics, electromechanical systems or optomechanical systems

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
