As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will conduct research on epitaxial complex-oxide thin films and heterostructures as well as chalcogenide-based quantum materials using scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron energy-loss spectroscopy (STEM/EELS). This position is to lead our ongoing efforts in understanding interfacial phenomena in functional perovskite oxide materials for emerging information and energy technologies as well as the area of quantum materials for quantum information science. The work involves close collaboration across groups to utilize advanced imaging and high-resolution STEM/EELS to study thin film structures prepared by both pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). This position will involve close collaboration with both microscopists and film growers and will be using advanced STEM facilities at ORNL.  This position resides in the Thin Films and Nanostrctures Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 
• Develop and carry out research to investigate thin films using state-of-the-art STEMs equipped with electron energy-loss spectrometers and cryo stages
• Develop new methods to perform data analysis of local variations of atomic positions and their local electronic and magnetic structures
• Work in the fast paced and highly collaborative environment at ORNL to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
• Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related science discipline completed within the last five years

Preferred Qualifications:
• Research background in STEM-EELS with knowledge of transition metal oxides or similar materials
• Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills
• Ability to communicate to an international scientific audience.
• Possession of a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
• Ability to work with little supervision, meet deadlines and participate creatively in a collaborative team
• Highly motivated with the ability to work in a dynamic environment.
• Familiarity with numerical data analysis and customization of control software (Labview, Matlab, or Python)
• Experience with the data analyses of soft x-ray spectroscopies, optical spectroscopies, electron spectroscopies, and/or neutron reflectivity

Special Requirement:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
