We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on the synthesis of new organic compounds with a goal to develop improved processes for the separation of critical materials (e.g., adjacent lanthanide separation). This position resides in the Chemical Separations Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


As part of our research team, you will have the opportunity to work with and learn from specialists in synthesis, separations chemistry, organic and polymer synthesis, theory, thermodynamics, spectroscopy, and materials characterization. You will be encouraged to participate in internal and national meetings to broaden your scientific horizons and present your research accomplishments.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform hands-on synthesis, characterization (e.g., by NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, CV) and testing of new compounds
  • Participate in project planning and execution
  • Attend and present at the project and group meetings and national conferences
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in chemistry or a closely related discipline completed within the last five years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in synthetic organic chemistry including experience with multi-step organic synthesis and extensive organic compound structural characterization
  • A broad theoretical and experimental knowledge of different organic transformations and expertise in characterization by 1D and 2D NMR, FTIR, Uv-Vis spectroscopy, knowledge of and experience with cyclic voltammetry (CV) is a plus
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
