Overview: 

We are seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in the synthesis of cyclic polymers and copolymers. The position resides in the Macromolecular Nanomaterials Group, Nanomaterials Synthesis Section,  at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and will be directly associated with our theme science on Harnessing Complex Macromolecular Conformations and the Macromolecular Nanoscience group.

 

As part of our research team, you will be working with a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists at the CNMS and across other divisions at ORNL, including the Neutron Scattering Division and the Chemical Sciences Division with complementary skillsets in neutron scattering experiments (neutron reflectometry, small-angle neutron scattering and neutron spin-echo).

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Synthesis of cyclic homopolymer and block copolymers for solution and melt studie,
  • High competence in general on macromolecular or polymer synthesis.
  • Work closely with the Functional Atomic Force Microscopy, Functional Hybrid Nanomaterials and the Nanomaterials Theory Institute at the CNMS to study and improve molecular materials.
  • Present and report research results and publish in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related science discipline completed within the last five years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in polymer synthesis with emphasis on cyclic polymers
  • Experience in polymer characterization including gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), light scattering, thermal characterization and viscoelastic measurements. 
  • A record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference presentations
  • The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team effort
  • Proven ability to function well in a dynamic research environment, set priorities, multi- task and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

 Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
