Overview: 

We are seeking a Power system modeling, simulation, and controls engineer who will focus on the modeling, analysis, and design of novel control systems for smart electrical power sytems. This position will involve working closely with a team of engineers to address challenging control problems faced by the national power grid as it transitions to a future in which distributed generation, renewables, and controllable loads play a crucial role in enabling economical, reliable, and environmentally sustainable power generation and delivery. This position resides in Systems Engineering and Cybernetics Group in the Computational Sciences & Engineering Division of the Computing & Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will…

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct novel research to improve the computational performance of large-scale power system dynamic simulations that are used for the development of advanced control concepts.
  • Design and analysis of novel algorithms for the distributed control of loads within residential and small to medium commercial buildings to provide a variety of grid ancillary services, including demand response, frequency regulation, and voltage regulation.
  • Design and analysis of novel algorithms for control microgrids that mix small scale fossil fuel generation with significant renewable power sources.
  • Publish research findings in high impact journals and conferences.
  • Support the development of research proposals to the Department of Energy and other sponsors.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other field relevant to the job duties.
  • Demonstrated research experience in the areas of power systems modeling, control systems modeling or communication systems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working within a highly diverse team, as well as strong oral and written communications skills, good organizational habits, and a high degree of personal motivation.
  • Experience with development and analyses of power system models, and a publications record in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proven analytical skills using Python, Matlab, C++ and/or similar, and experience with statistical analyses techniques.
