Overview

The Microstructural Evolution Modeling research group in the Materials Science and Technology Division is seeking an R&D associate with expertise in process modeling and resulting material behavior of additively manufactured alloys. In this position, you will be responsible for performing research related to understanding the material process-structure-property relationships for additive manufacturing processing, with an emphasis on the design, optimization, and application of structural metals.

 

You will be expected to perform detailed research tasks related to the application of computational modeling to understand the relationship between fundamental material characteristics, additive manufacturing process conditions, and the resulting microstructure. You will also interact with a diverse group of researchers across ORNL to solve challenging, interdisciplinary problems, and to effectively communicate with outside entities, including university and industrial partners. Interaction between theoretical modeling and applied research at ORNL user facilities will be expected.

 

 Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Work within a committed team of scientists to simulate, process, and characterize alloys
  • Optimize process conditions to produce high quality material and relate the material performance to microstructure using advanced characterization techniques
  • Interact with industrial partners, other research organizations, and universities related to advanced manufacturing technologies, and product, systems, and materials development
  • Present and report research results and lead the publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner

 

Basic Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with process modeling techniques for heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and phase transformations in metallic alloys
  • Background in physical metallurgy, with an emphasis on structural alloys
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Experience in the use of computational thermodynamics, data analytics, advanced characterization, and/or experience in the application of advanced manufacturing
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities and to meet deadlines
