Purpose

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Center for Bioenergy Innovation (CBI), led by ORNL, is engineering feedstock plants and microbes to create a sustainable bioeconomy. CBI builds on a robust legacy of scientific understanding to provide breakthroughs for a new generation of cost-effective, environmentally positive, and industrially relevant bioproducts and biofuels. CBI is a fast-paced organization with over 250 researchers from 15 partner organizations throughout the US with a budget of $25 million per year.

We seek a highly qualified Business Specialist to support the CBI within the Biosciences Division (BSD) under the Energy and Environmental Sciences Directorate (EESD). The position will provide support to the CBI Director, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Project Manager. We are looking for someone who can anticipate the needs and respond to an exceptionally high level of unanticipated requests (internal to CBI and external DOE sponsors).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Lead the primary information and business analyst tasks for the CBI project, including DOE sponsor report generation, intra- and inter--Center communication, CBI website content and development. Primarily responsible for maintenance and collection of data and information to be used in reports and reviews and for communicating progress to both internal and external stakeholders.

 

Work is guided by CBI policies, procedures and strategy. However, incumbent is expected to use discretion and independent judgment in the selection of solutions (solutions range from known and/or development of new) to solve a variety of complex CBI technical problems. This requires the application of advanced knowledge and professional judgment. The outcome of actions/decisions, quality of the reports, presentations, website/wiki and marketing materials reflects directly on the progress and reputation of CBI, especially when those products are used by stakeholders outside of CBI. The key stakeholders for CBI include the primary DOE program office, partner institutions, ORNL and the broader scientific community.  Impactful decisions made by key stakeholders regarding CBI are partially, and in some cases primarily based on these products. Ms. Has frequent interaction with CBI team members/CBI management inside ORNL, DOE and with the partners. Influences management in formulating/refining, interpreting and implementing program and/or project goals and objectives through expert advice.

 

Specific tasks include:

 

Communications

  • Captures and consolidates scientific progress and prepare reports and statistics for CBI management and DOE program managers
  • Generates and revises communication materials to include creating and editing CBI videos and promotional materials
  • Supports CBI management team by collecting and analyzing information and by refining internal and external communications activities
  • Designs, implements and evaluates (cradle to grave) the marketing and communications aspects of CBI
  • Designs and composes reports, designs and tracks metrics and other external communications for CBI Management to ensure information flow
  • Manages the CBI Alumni activity
  • Stays appropriately networked and keeps abreast of trends, news, events and deadlines in order to ensure that all potential marketing opportunities for CBI are fully developed
  • Identifies, implements and evaluates tools that can be leveraged for the benefit of CBI (e.g., on-line marketing, internet-based training programs)

 

Website/Information Management and Database Administration

  • Maintains and improves CBI website
  • Identifies new content and updates website routinely
  • Developed and populates databases web-based forms and surveys
  • Designs and is responsible for management of layout and content, updates and maintains (cradle to grave) the CBI website
  • Designs and is responsible for maintenance, layout and content of (cradle to grave) publications tracking database

 

Project Management

  • Assists project office in collecting, analyzing and reporting operational information
  • Liaison to the CBI post docs and students
  • Participates and contributes in the planning for the annual CBI Science Retreat
    • Designs Science Retreat Program
      • Determines/composes special CBI-related articles for inclusion

 

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree with a minimum of two years of relevant office experience is required.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, analytical, oral and written communication skills, outstanding computer skills and valuable organization skills
  • Handle business sensitive information and materials in an ethical manner
  • Possess advanced level of knowledge in office computer systems and software applications (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Demonstrate attentiveness to detail, possess proven editing and writing skills.
  • Possess experience in designing and modifying web-based materials
  • Independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Have proven ability to work independently, in a team, and with a diverse staff

 

Qualifications Preferred

  • Possess advanced familiarity with CBI research technical terminology, knowledge of ORNL organizations, operations, procedures, and systems
