The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an experienced, full-time staff member to function as a Quality Assurance Tester as part of an agile development team to plan and execute testing activities. 


The position will interact directly with all levels of the organization including ITSD agile and functional team members such as ITSD Systems Team, Scrum Masters, Developers, Product Managers, Product Owners, Project Managers, User Interface/User Experience experts, ITSD Division Director/Chief Information Officer and Group Leaders as well as end users or customers to deliver functionality on time ensuing the highest quality built-in. This position will report to the Portfolio Management Group Leader for project assignment and policy direction.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning – actively participate in agile development team meetings, activities and ceremonies, keeping the big picture in mind and considering user stories in the larger context. Understand data flows, business requirements, and expected outcomes.
  • Test Environment Setup – configure and validate test environments and test tools, enable test-driven development, wireframing, troubleshooting, etc.
  • Test Planning and Execution – develop, review and estimate user stories in light of user personas, define and accept test criteria and definition of done for test-driven development, plan application and iteration testing, write test cases and scenarios, test scripts, prepare test data, ensure traceability to stories, develop and maintain automated testing and develop regression stack for future testing, plan and perform functional testing, integration testing, load testing, black box/white box testing, security testing and regression testing. Guides business customers, end users or other stakeholders through user acceptance testing.
  • Collaboration –work best in a collaborative team-based environment where iterative delivery of high-quality working software is a measure of progress. Challenge the team to consider the impact of design on performance, load, scalability, accessibility, security and penetration. Work with the team to investigate and resolve issues.
  • Communication – communicate directly by exhibiting excellent written and verbal communication skills in a team fast-paced environment with a willingness to adjust to changing priorities. Identify, document and communicate test status and defects, defect prioritization, track test issues/defects to closure and identify ideas for improvement.
  • Risk Management – identify and communicate QA risks, impacts and mitigation strategies to the team.
  • Leadership – provide QA leadership, serve as an advocate for quality assurance and the end user experience. Identify and communicate improvements to end user experience and delivery of value.
  • Continuous Improvement – exhibit a willingness to embrace change, continually explore new tools and techniques to improve how the team delivers and achieves quality. Review and analyze performance metrics. Explore processes, techniques and tools to improve the value delivered and increase velocity. Continually develop QA knowledge, skills and techniques and work to improve those of your agile team and of ITSD in general.
  • Mentoring- mentor and train QA testers, developers and other team members on standard QA testing best practices and knowledge by providing information, recommendations, guidance and assistance.


Basic Requirements

  • Education - Bachelor’s degree preferably in computer science, business management, information systems, or related disciplines, or a combination of education and experience.
  • QA Testing Experience – At least three years’ experience in software application System Testing, Integration Testing, User Interface Testing, Regression and Acceptance Testing. Knowledge of and proficiency with a variety of software testing techniques. Experience with test management tools required. Critical thinker, strong analytical and statistical skills, passionate about quality and customer experience.  Possesses organizational skills and adapt to change and prioritize work. Demonstrated track record of investigation analysis, problem-solving and decision-making is required.
  • Agile Experience - Hands on experience in structured test methods, procedures and processes in automated software testing with awareness of agile methodologies (SAFE, Scrum, Kanban, Extreme Programming) delivering multi-platform solutions working directly with an agile development team. 
  • IT Experience - Demonstrated practical experience in IT, preferably in QA testing or development, especially applications development, systems operations, and major infrastructure/technology deployments and upgrades. Experience in multi-platform environment. Experience with Cyber Security, Data Security and Behavior Analytics and the ability to develop and execute detailed test cases, scenarios and scripts.
  • Security Clearance - Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing.  The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Education - An advanced degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, business management or related discipline.
  • Certification(s) – certification in software QA, agile or process improvement is a plus, such as Certified Software Quality Analyst (CSQA), Certified Associate in Software Testing (CAST), Certified Software Tester (CSTE), any QA testing ISTQB certifications, Certified Manager of Software Testing (CMST), any Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) certification
  • Self-directed – Illustrates strong organizational skills, ownership, excellent time management, written and verbal communications, analytical, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Teamwork - Demonstrated interpersonal skills working with collaborative cross-functional teams, particularly including scientists, engineers, managers, administrators, and technicians. 
  • Communicator - Strong verbal, written and presentation communicator at all levels of an organization, as well as to external stakeholders.
  • QA Mentor – experience mentoring or in training others in an IT environment on QA testing knowledge, principles, techniques and best practices.
