The Physics Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for a senior research staff position in experimental quantum sensing science. The division seeks to develop a quantum sensing platform that uses unique transduction mechanisms and quantum entanglement to advance detectors for nuclear and particle physics to new regimes of sensitivity; use integration to enable scalability for HEP sensors; and, build next-generation detectors with novel, advanced techniques. All work will be carried out in collaboration with the Quantum Information Science group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division and the recently established Quantum Science Center at ORNL. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead new and ongoing research in quantum-enhanced sensing for fundamental physics.
  • Formulate novel quantum information solutions to fundamental physics problems and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
  • Lead and collaborate in multiple R&D projects.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national and international audiences at all levels.
  • Work with sponsors independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Mentor early career research staff, postdocs, and students.


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in physics, optics, computer science, or a directly related field with a minimum of 6 years of post-PhD experience
  • Background in theoretical and/or experimental quantum information


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Quantum Sensing technologies.
  • Independent research competence as demonstrated by a significant number of national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
  • Experience supervising junior research staff and demonstrated success in research project management.
