Overview

 

This position is for an associate research and development staff member in the Target Design, Analysis, and Qualification Group, Radioisotope Science and Technology Division, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Radioisotope Science and Technology Division uses unique resources at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), for production, handling, separations, and dispensing of a variety of nuclear materials.

We are seeking applicants with experience in the fields of nuclear and mechanical engineering, materials irradiation, and nuclear materials handling, to support the design, fabrication, and remote handling of radioisotope production targets within a category II nuclear facility. Major duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Working with isotope production research staff, translate conceptual production designs to detailed mechanical designs for fabrication and assembly.
  • Produce drawings, specifications, inspection and assembly plans, and other technical documents necessary for the qualification of materials for irradiation.
  • Produce work plans for the disassembly and handling of irradiated materials.
  • Work with ORNL transportation services to arrange for the movement of nuclear materials between facilities on the ORNL site and to external users.
  • Manage laboratory spaces in category II nuclear facilities and radiological facilities.

 

Qualifications Required:

 

  • This position requires a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field and a minimum of four years of relevant experience.
  • Work towards a graduate degree with relevant research experience may be applied towards this requirement.
  • Demonstrated experience is required in the design of mechanical components for fabrication, and with the use of solid modeling and design software.
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and technical writing.
  • This position may also require access to technology and information that is subject to export control requirements.  Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license. 

 

Qualifications Desired:

 

  • Experience with remote handling systems.
  • Experience maintaining high levels of quality control and assurance in a fabrication or production environment.
