Overview:

We are seeking a senior staff member who will focus on leading the research and assessment of workforce development / capacity building needs for nuclear energy deployment, including education and training initiatives both domestically and internationally for a variety of sponsors, including but not limited to Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy, State Department etc. These programs will cover technical and managerial topics across nuclear energy. Experience working in research, academia and professional training delivery organizations at the international level is highly desired. The candidate will be expected to lead on the research, assessment, development, delivery and management of the workforce development courses and classes and provide guidance to other staff to support the delivery. This position resides in the Nuclear Operations and Licensing Group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong and experienced background in professional workforce research and development across multiple disciplines (technical and managerial topics) within nuclear energy. This includes, but not limited to education and training.
  • There will be an emphasis on the research and assessment of workforce development needs across the nuclear energy enterprise as well as producing and delivery of the education and training material, as well as the overall management of the programs.
  • Key outcomes of the role will include delivery of research publications (papers, journals, reports) on capacity building that identify research needs, risks and solutions.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to have experience in both workforce development programs, education and training at undergraduate and graduate levels. Experience of delivery on the international stage is highly preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing workforce needs and from there, conceptualizing and designing courses essential to ensuring the maintenance and expansion of domestic and international programs.
  • Activities will include mentoring of early- and mid-career staff in the production and delivery of high-quality workforce development material to support the overall capability at ORNL.
  • The successful candidate will be required to effectively interact with various personnel and sponsors (e.g., DOE-NE), both within and outside of ORNL, as well as international organizations (e.g., International Atomic Energy Agency).
  • Additional duties will include development of relationships and opportunities with academia, to support the teaching and research at US universities.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in nuclear engineering or a relevant field and 6+ years of experience in education and training of nuclear energy courses, MS degree with 12+ years, or BS with 15+ years of similar experience.
  • A strong grasp of the nuclear engineering and management fundamentals.
  • Experience working across and within education and training fields.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors.
  • Experience with international organizations and institutes.
  • Organized, detail-oriented and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture, with a focus on quality and consistency in training material.
  • The successful candidate will ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Track record in successful proposal writing for sponsors, leading and working with sponsor on delivering on projects from inception, through proposal development to delivery of the results.
