We are seeking an R&D Staff Member to lead and perform research in high temperature ceramics and composites. The emphasis will be on accelerating discovery and design of the next generation of ultra-high temperature ceramic systems for advanced power generation, nuclear fuels and reactor components, aero and stationary turbines, and various other aerospace applications. The priority will be development of advanced ceramic matrix composite (CMC) systems for structural applications in extreme environments.  Advanced ceramic materials for composite systems, and the associated synthesis methods, will be developed with an emphasis on ceramic matrices, fiber coatings and protective external layers produced employing advanced chemical vapor processing approaches.  This position will leverage the full spectrum of materials science resources and capabilities of ORNL to guide fundamental discovery, understanding and accelerated design of new ceramic compositions with superior thermomechanical properties and environmental stability at extreme temperatures. In parallel, ceramic synthesis methods that are compatible with key ceramic fiber systems, and are capable of scaling to eventual commercial deployment, will also be developed. The staff member will be expected to provide innovation and leadership to grow the scientific emphasis and technical impact of advanced structural ceramic materials within ORNL and DOE. This position resides in the Materials Processing and Joining Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:  
• Participate in developing, in collaboration with other ORNL staff and stakeholders, a five-year ORNL strategic plan for discovery, design, synthesis and development of advanced structural ceramic materials for ultra-high temperature applications
• Establish a multi-year, internally-funded research plan and participate in developing a team of ORNL materials scientists and engineers with the mission of pursuing scientific understanding and design of new materials for next generation ceramic composite systems
• Create strong relationships and participate in integrating ORNL’s staff and capabilities in computational materials, materials testing and evaluation, environmental exposure and advanced characterization, to accelerate discovery and design of new ceramics and composites
• Participate in design, build and operation of new state-of-the-art chemical vapor synthesis reactors to allow effective and efficient research and development of new ceramic matrix and coating materials
• Develop experimental protocols to design, synthesize and characterize new ceramics to understand their structures, properties and thermo-mechanical and environmental performance under a variety of extreme environments
• Within the research portfolio foster development of a foundation of fundamental scientific understanding that addresses key gaps, and upon which new UHT ceramic materials can be designed and synthesized
• Create healthy collaborations and attract research and development partnerships, including external funding, with organizations outside ORNL whose mission interests are compatible with high temperature ceramic systems.
• Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner, where allowable under IP and export control boundaries
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
• Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
Basic Qualifications:
• A PhD in Materials Science/Engineering or a closely related field
• At least 5 years of experience in the field of high temperature materials, preferably structural ceramics and associated coatings
• The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with chemical vapor synthesis research and development in the areas of high temperature ceramics, coatings and composites
• Experience in research, development and fabrication of ceramic matrix composite systems including matrix, fiber coatings and external environmental protective layers
• Background in materials science of high temperature ceramic systems, particularly non-oxides
• Strong hands-on experience in designing, building and operating chemical vapor deposition and chemical vapor infiltration reactors
• Demonstrated working knowledge in testing and characterization of ceramics and ceramic composite systems.
• Experience and success in writing proposals for materials research
• Ability to develop, market and grow high-impact materials research programs for a variety of internal and external customers
• Ability to lead a research team and to also support the leadership of other staff in various teaming arrangements.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience
• Willingness to participate and partner creatively in a variety of collaborative, cross-cutting, dynamic team environments
• Motivated and safety conscious
• Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs
• An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals or by reports and patents from industrially-focused research
Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
