Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for an early to mid-career scientist position in the Radiation Transport Group who will contribute to research on simulation of radiation transport in fusion and fission systems and developments of methodologies for complex and challenging radiation transport problems.  A focus will be on nuclear analysis and design for fusion systems. This position resides within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate, at ORNL.

 

ORNL has world-leading expertise in the fusion energy field including being the headquarters of U.S. ITER and the site of the MPEX project. ORNL also has world class super-computing capabilities in Summit and Frontier that can be used for fusion radiation transport analyses. The ORNL Radiation Transport group develops, applies, and deploys state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities, along with leveraging extensive experience, to solve highly challenging radiation transport and shielding problems across a wide range of nuclear applications areas. Our methods and codes are deployed in various frameworks including the SCALE and VERA code suites, the ADVANTG tool suite, ORNL-TN, and ORCS, in collaboration with industry, national laboratories, and universities both domestically and internationally.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform individual and collaborative R&D on radiation transport analyses and activation calculations for fusion and fission systems using ORNL tools.
  • Develop improved methodologies to perform large-scale and complex radiation transport simulations more efficiently.
  • Support efforts in developing proposals for innovative radiation transport analysis/methodologies and collaborative interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Communicate the technical aspects of this research through publication of results in peer reviewed journals, conferences, meetings, and workshops.
  • Lead elements of R&D projects with some latitude to define objectives and approaches to ensure technical and programmatic success.
  • Effectively interact and collaborate with technical peers, supervisors, team leaders, program managers, and sponsors, both domestically and internationally, to meet the requirements of projects within scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Collaborate on the development of fusion as a source of energy to benefit the domestic and international community.

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a PhD in physics or engineering related to radiation transport simulations plus a minimum of 5 years of experience in one of the following disciplines: nuclear engineering, mechanical nuclear engineering, physics, radiological science, computational science, or applied mathematics.
  • Candidates must have experience using coding and scripting languages (Fortran, C++, and/or Python) and UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems.
  • Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable interacting with peers, program managers, and national and international sponsors.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of various radiation transport analysis tools
  • Knowledge of nuclear fusion systems and fusion pilot plant designs.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
