The Technical Services, Finishing, and Dispensing Group (TSF&D) within the newly formed Radioisotope Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applications for an Associate Radiochemical Laboratory Technician.  The Radioisotope Science and Technology Division is responsible for production, handling, separations, and dispensing of a variety of nuclear materials.


The TSF&D group uses the unique ORNL capabilities, including High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and hot cell facilities, to research, produce, purify, and dispense isotopes in support of the Department of Energy (DOE) mission and for other government agencies and private organizations as requested through DOE. This work applies radiochemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and nuclear engineering principles to the processing and handling of nuclear and other hazardous materials. Key activities of the TSF&D group include the chemical separation and purification of materials; and characterization, packing, and shipping of radioisotope products. Standard and highly specialized laboratory equipment is operated and maintained, and work may be performed on the bench top, in fume hoods, gloveboxes, or heavily shielded hot cell facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance and research and technical staff, setup and maintain chemical processing equipment
  • Following documented procedures, operate chemical processing equipment and handle nuclear materials within shielded hot cell facilities using remote mechanical manipulators
  • Prepare chemical solutions, make observations, collect data, maintain clear and complete records, assist with coordination of radioactive and hazardous waste disposal, and manage chemical inventory
  • Contribute as a team member and assist technical staff and senior technicians with day-to-day operations of chemical and radiochemical laboratories and resolve process-related issues as they arise


  • Associate degree or equivalent in pure or applied science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two or more years of relevant technical experience, with demonstrated knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and hands-on experience with remote handling of nuclear materials
  • Experience operating remote manipulators is preferred

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
