Overview: 

 

The Fuel Cycle Chemistry (FCC) Group within the Integrated Fuel Cycle Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for an applied technical staff position, with emphasis in the area of Radiochemistry/ Radiochemical Engineering. The primary mission of the Fuel Cycle Chemistry (FCC) group is to apply fundamental chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering concepts to cutting edge research in the field of actinide chemistry across the whole nuclear fuel cycle.

 

Major Duties/ Responsibilities:

 

  • The position involves the application of fundamental chemistry and radiochemical techniques to the processing and handling of nuclear materials across the nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Independently solve technical problems and be able to effectively document and communicate work in a timely manner.
  • Support development and assembly of test equipment for radioactive materials and reactive gases.
  • Support the development of solid phase analytical techniques for actinide and/or radioactive materials.
  • Assist with experiments at scales ranging from lab- to engineering-scale, including experimental work with radionuclides and hazardous chemicals in controlled facilities or in the field.
  • Assist R&D staff with the development of funding proposals as well as reporting R&D activities appropriately through journal publications, technical presentations, and reports in a timely and ethical manner.

 

Qualifications Required:

 

Skills Required:

 

  • Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Chemical, Nuclear or Environmental Engineering, Geology, or related discipline.
  • Experience in handling radioactive materials, particularly transuranic materials, and a range of analytical techniques is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment and ability and willingness to perform hands on work, acquire new knowledge, and learn new skills are required.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced R&D environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy and will be subject to HRP requirements. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Skills Desired:

  • Experience working in an R&D setting.
  • Demonstrated experience running and maintaining complex research equipment used for materials characterization and production.
  • Demonstrated publication excellence.
  • Research in the application of advanced separations applied to inorganic and/or radiological systems.
