The Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing Group (BVRP) within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking application for a senior R&D radiochemist to lead isotope production R&D and operations.   



The Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing Group (BVRP) within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a senior R&D radiochemist.  We are seeking highly motivated radiochemist to join our growing team and to help lead and develop processes for the production of medical radioisotopes that will be of benefit to society.  Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, the BVRP supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes that are important in medical and industrial applications supporting the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies, as well as the needs of private organizations and institutions.  Our current focus is on research and development supporting the production of medical and industrial radioisotopes, including Sr-89, Ba-133, Pm-147, Lu-177, W-188, Ac-227 and Th-229 at the ORNL High Flux Isotope Reactor.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop production and chemical separation strategies for the recovery and purification of radioisotopes
  • Lead project activities as well as provide technical oversight for isotope R&D and production activities
  • Identify and propose new areas of research related to optimizing the processing of radioisotopes
  • Lead the development of research proposals, plan and conduct research, and publish work in peer reviewed journals where possible
  • Interact effectively with technical and operations staff to safely execute work within highly regulated facilities.


Qualifications Required:

  • The candidate must have a held Ph.D. in chemistry or related field for the six year and well-established track record and background in radioisotope R&D. 
  • Experience in the production and purification of radioisotopes is highly desirable.  It is essential that that candidates have demonstrated ability and hands-on experience with working with radioactive materials, and experience with glove box and/or hot cell operations in radiological facilities. 
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with peers, project managers, sponsors, and technical and non-technical staff. 
  • Self-motivation, ability to work in a team, and a commitment to safe work practices are essential.
