Overview:
We are seeking a Technical Professional who will support the Radiochemical Engineering and Development Center (REDC) Laboratory Chemical Operations (LCO) Group within the Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Using the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, IPMD supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications. The REDC LCO Group is responsible for separating, preparing, dispensing, and shipping a variety of radioisotopes to support private organizations, commercial institutions, Department of Energy (DOE), and other government agencies. Our current focus is producing and processing radioisotopes used in medical, scientific, and commercial applications, including actinides, Es-254, Bk-249, Ac-225, Ra-225, and dispensing long-lived actinide radioisotopes .
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop an in-depth understanding and knowledge of radioisotope production processes and the Bateman Equation to calculate the ingrowth of multi-generational decay daughters.
- Support the mission of the isotope program by developing strategies to identify, improve, and sustain the overall manufacturing operations, specifically dispensing, packaging, and shipping long-lived radioisotopes.
- Support production equipment installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance schedules.
- Develop cost estimates for radioisotope work authorizations and maintaining the long-lived dispensing inventory.
- Provide reports to management and the DOE Isotope Program detailing long-lived dispensing inventory availability, dispensing efforts, stock replenishment, and miscellaneous project efforts.
- Serve as NMC&A Custodian for long-lived radioisotopes at REDC.
- Provide technical guidance and correspondence.
- Provide support for continuous improvement and optimization.
- Work closely with technicians, quality representatives, engineers, and scientists to understand manufacturing issues and help provide solutions to solve them.
- Interface within and outside of the division on relevant analysis, systems, processes, and waste activities.
- Collaborate with peers to develop collaborative solutions.
- Participate in project reviews, including presenting to internal and external staff.

Basic Qualifications:
- BS in Chemistry, or similar field, and a minimum of five years of related experience is required.
- Experience reading radioanalytical data such as alpha, beta, gamma, neutron, and mass spectroscopy.
- Strong computer and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research/production environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in handling radioactive materials and calculating radioactive decay.
- Experience with wet chemical processing methods in radiostope production and dispensing using radiological hoods, glove box and/or remote handling hot cell operations.
- Understanding of radioisotope applications in nuclear medicine.
- Strong analytical skills in interpreting isotopic data.
- Experience with the execution of chemical processing techniques such as solvent extraction and ion exchange separations.
Special Requirements:
- Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
