Overview: 

The Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for Radiological Engineer positions within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD). 

 

ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.  ORNL operates five non-reactor nuclear facilities and dozens of radiological facilities that perform nuclear research and isotope production activities to support the advancement of nuclear power applications, renewable energy, basic scientific research, and isotope production for medical and industrial applications.  ORNL also operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a one-of-a-kind research facility that provides the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. 

 

The NRPD is seeking a radiological engineer to provide technical support to radiological protection operations groups that support ORNL research and facility operations staff.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop or revise technical basis documents, technical evaluations, operational radiological protection procedures, and ALARA Reviews.
  • Support shielding calculations to support shielding design for a wide range of gamma, x-ray, and neutron intensities and energy spectra.
  • Assist with airflow studies in facilities to ensure optimal placement of Continuous Air Monitoring equipment.
  • Review, evaluate, and approve Radiological Work Permits and assit with determining applicable radiobioassay requirements commensurate with the radiological intake hazards.
  • Routinely interface with radiological and operations staff in work planning
  • Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.
  • Participate in assessments, critiques, incident investigations, and related reviews at ORNL
  • Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support team.
  • Assist glovebox design, air monitoring, ALARA Design, and ALARA programs, as required

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in Health Physics, engineering, or related technical field.
  • A minimum of two years applicable experience.
  • Working knowledge of radiation protection principles .

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or Engineering degree with a Health Physics emphasis, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field, with one year of applicable experience.
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience radiological protection calculations.
  • Past or current service in an internship position supporting the NRPD at ORNL
  • Experience within the DOE Complex and practical experience implementing a Radiation Protection Program in accordance with 10 CFR 835.
  • Excellence in verbal and written communication. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and principles for monitoring airborne radioactivity. Radiological analytical laboratory experience is a plus.

 

Physical Requirements:

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

HSPD-12 PIV badge:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.  

 

Q  clearance:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
