Overview:   

The Radiological Protection Operations (RPO) Manager position resides within the Balance of Lab group within the Nuclear and Radiation Protection Division (NRPD) for the Environmental Safety Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  NRPD is seeking RPO Managers to provide line management direction to teams of Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) to support the ORNL Mission. The Balance of Lab group supports multiple research, maintenance, and demolition organizations throughout various nuclear and radiological facilities within the ORNL campus. RPO Managers are assigned to a single RPO Complex. The goal is to help ensure appropriate balance between accomplishing research, maintenance, and demolition while protecting ORNL staff from radiological hazards and ensuring regulatory/procedure compliance. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • The RPO Manager position reports to one of the RPO Group Leaders responsible for the Balance of Lab group.
  • This position has direct responsibility for ensuring that all radiological work performed within their assigned ORNL complex is executed effectively, efficiently, and in compliance with ORNL Radiological Protection Program requirements and applicable UT-Battelle policies and procedures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a technical, scientific, or engineering discipline with a minimum of eight years of applied DOE radiological protection field experience including at least three years of management/lead experience. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated leadership skill working in a complex high-hazard radiological work environment.
  • Active registration as a Radiation Protection Technologist by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) or equivalent demonstration of technical competence in health physics/radiological protection such as a BS in health physics, nuclear or radiological engineering, CHP, etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • Demonstrated work experience in a broad range of applied nuclear and radiological operations including work with research reactors, high energy accelerators, and transuranic isotope processing facilities. 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills working in a complex high-hazard radiological work environment.
  • Candidates with prior ORNL RPO experience will have a competitive advantage.
  • Development of RWPs, work plans, and Research Safety Summaries (RSS).
  • An active DOE- Q clearance.
  • Implementation of project specific survey and release plans.
  • Development of solutions to complex release activities involving complex technical guidance such as MARSSIM and MARSAME.
  • Recognition of instrumentation limitations and making recommendations for other types of instruments when occasions arise for dose verification/air sample monitoring/etc.
  • Characterization and cleanout of legacy laboratories.
  • Radiation safety principles for radiation generating device operation and safety interlocks.
  • Packaging, labeling, and transportation of radioactive and hazardous wastes.
  • Processing of high specific activity radionuclides within glove boxes and hot cells.
  • DOE operations and maintenance experience.
  • Knowledgeable of standard workplace personal computer applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Special Requirements:

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
