Overview: 

We are seeking an R&D Associate who will focus on research and development of refractory composite materials, with the primary focus on processing and characterization of fiber reinforced composites suitable for nuclear fusion and fission applications. This position resides in the Advanced Nuclear Materials (ANM) Group in the Materials in Extremes Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will study and develop the next generation composite structural materials by advancing science and technology of composite design and processing, failure mechanisms, refractory materials, and radiation damage.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct studies on design and processing of refractory composites for fusion and fission applications
  • Conduct and coordinate microstructural and thermo-mechanical properties examinations of the composite materials
  • Conduct and coordinate neutron irradiation experiments of the composites
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science or a related discipline
  • Experience in refractory materials and/or composites

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the processing and evaluation of refractory alloys and/or high temperature composites
  • Experience with chemical vapor deposition and/or infiltration
  • Strong background in fracture mechanics and theory of alloys and high temperature composite materials
  • Strong background in radiation effects in materials
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
