The Geospatial Science & Human Security Division (GSHSD) at ORNL seeks to hire qualified candidates to support spectral and spatial research initiatives with a special emphasis upon remote sensing and image analysis. Under the guidance of research staff, the selected applicant(s) will take roles on multidisciplinary teams supporting cutting-edge research and engineering as well as data production and advisement on quality assurance.

The National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory leads scientific and technological breakthroughs to confront some of the nation’s most difficult security challenges. We develop interdisciplinary applications needed for the security of our nation today and target our vision on how these challenges may manifest themselves in a decade or more. Our research and development focus on geospatial science and technology and high-performance computing as well as cybersecurity and cyber physical resiliency, data analytics, and nuclear nonproliferation for sensitive national security missions. We also enhance ORNL contributions to national security challenges by working closely with leading researchers at the lab in areas such as environmental, computing, biosecurity, nuclear and chemical sciences and engineering, applied materials, advanced manufacturing and transportation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the research, development, and production of workflow elements for airborne and satellite image classification, feature extraction, and 3D analysis.
  • Collaborative teamwork with multi-disciplinary research & development and technical staff
  • Opportunities to contribute to innovative imagery and GIS data assurance and quality assessments
  • Provide decision support for geospatial data curation, validation and visualization

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in geography, geospatial science, remote sensing, or a closely related discipline.
  • Proficiency with open source or commercial GIS software
  • Experience with remote sensing image interpretation
  • Experience with data management and planning
  • Excellent communication, organization, and decision-making skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years relevant work experience
  • Experience with stereo imagery, LIDAR, and other 3D sensing capabilities
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience with open-source geospatial data
  • Proficient in a linux environment
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages (ex. Python)
  • Familiarity with the basics of machine learning & high-performance computing (HPC)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position, which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing.  The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
