Overview: 

The Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) within Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) is seeking a Research Operations Specialist for Buildings 4501 and 4505 to join our Nuclear Research Operations (NRO) Group.  The research supported by NRO includes radiochemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and nuclear engineering using materials ranging from non-radioactive chemicals to highly radioactive materials in laboratories, gloveboxes, and hot cells.  This position requires a highly organized, self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal abilities, and effective oral and written communication skills.

 

The successful candidate will work as a part of a cross-functional team supporting research activities across the multiple divisions and will be called upon to integrate his/her own knowledge and skill with that of other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to facilitate safe and secure operations.  This position will have broad responsibilities to improve/ensure operational discipline within the facility by assisting with implementation of environmental, safety, health, and regulatory requirements for research activities.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provide oversight and support of technical facility operations to provide the necessary resources to ensure the quality of operations is maintained at an acceptable level. Lead and/or participate in safety inspections
  • Provide support and oversight for the administrative requirements of the assigned laboratories, to include support for developing and maintaining Research Safety Summaries, Work Plans, and other work control measures as needed.
  • Assist line management in implementing the Integrated Safety Management program and Battelle’s The Safe Conduct of Research
  • Conduct Plan of the Week Meetings for ISED research operations within buildings 4501 and 4505
  • Verify that facilities are maintained in accordance with the Facility Use Agreements (FUA) in a manner that supports R&D tenant operations
  • Ensure that ISED research occupants operate in compliance with applicable, identified requirements
  • Understand ISED goals related to 4501 and 4505 facility management and operations and communicate these to building occupants and users  
  • Provide support to ISED for the management of controlled documents (operating procedures, work aids, and policies).  Prepare procedures/work aids/policies on an as-requested basis.  
  • Participate in engineering reviews and conduct periodic area walk-throughs
  • Interface with Complex Facility Managers the Facility Maintenance Organization and subject matter experts in support of installation and maintenance of research equipment and infrastructure needs
  • Provide leadership for implementation of strategies and mission by frequent personal interaction with customers, division management, Complex Project Leaders, Facility Engineer, craft personnel, and support staff personnel
  • Assists line management in response to injuries or events, occurrence reporting, investigations, and corrective actions
  • Support emergency response activities for Buildings 4501 and 4505  
  • Participate in assessments/audits and implement corrective actions and opportunities for improvements

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years of experience with operations, and/or providing support for R&D activities.
  • Professional Expertise:
    • Ability to operate independently and to prioritize work based on need and urgency.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and to make clear and concise oral or written presentations supporting classification determination rationale.
    • Ability to work effectively and maintain workable relationships in environments of widely differing viewpoints.
  • Work-related Experience: Experience in nuclear facilities, radiological facilities, chemical engineering, and nuclear engineering.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.  

 

Some national air travel and local travel is required in order to communicate with other National Laboratories, DOE sites, and technical and contacts in other agencies. On occasion, travel may be by auto to other locations and involve overnight stays at facilities in other states. The national travel involves travel for training, to attend conferences, to visit other DOE facilities, and for other purposes as identified by the management and client. The position will, in exigent or emergency situations, demand work on the weekends and at irregular hours. Due to the nature of the business, the position may be stressful. Actual physical demands are limited.
