We are currently seeking a research professional to join the Signals Collections and Analysis Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at ORNL. tThis position supports a broad array of research efforts for nuclear nonproliferation applications, targeting the development of advanced data acquisition techniques, control systems, and data analysis in post-processing and real-time environments. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and creative problem solver, comfortable handling complex programming and data acquisition needs to produce customized solutions for challenging nonproliferation problems.

 

The NSSD at ORNL leads ground-breaking research to address critical threats to national security. Leveraging a diverse array of capabilities in nuclear nonproliferation, data analytics, cybersecurity, cyber-physical resiliency, geospatial science, and high-performance computing, our organization seeks to produce world-class S&T products for sensitive national security missions.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Design, assemble, and deploy custom high-speed data acquisition systems, to include NI PXI and CompactRIO platforms.
  • Develop high-speed data analysis algorithms, both in post-processing and for real-time display.
  • Design custom electrical circuitry to satisfy project needs.
  • Work with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to plan, implement, and interpret results from experimental campaigns.
  • Conceive, write, and submit proposals to expand a research program investigating signal collection and analysis for nuclear nonproliferation objectives.
  • Compile and submit reporting on experimental results for technical and nontechnical personnel.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS in electrical engineering, physics, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or a related field and seven (7) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience programming with LabVIEW and Python, to include signal collection and analysis capabilities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the nuclear nonproliferation mission space.
  • An interest in working in the national security mission space, which often limits external peer-reviewed publication opportunities.
  • Proven ability to operate at a high level in a dynamic research environment, adapting to new research directions and setting priorities accordingly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in developing real-time display of process data using the programming languages mentioned above.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a complex research environment requiring adaptability to satisfy sponsor and mission requirements.

Q clearance with SCI:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
