Research Scientist, Quantum Networking

Overview: 

We are currently seeking a Research Scientist in the areas of software driven capability networking. This position is part of the Autonomous and Complex Systems Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division.  Our group designs, develops and deploys software-driven, advanced technologies to support instrument, quantum and high-performance networking capabilities. Examples include control-plane for control and data network paths for electron microscope systems, interconnecting quantum networking laboratories, and Virtual Infrastructure Twins (VIT) to support orchestration codes for instrument and container placement and execution.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Participate in new and ongoing research in instrument networking, quantum networking, instrument and computing federated systems, and AI/ML methods for these domains.
  • Formulate and design novel physical and virtual networking solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development, and testing necessary for the practical implementations and operations of those solutions.
  • Propose and contribute to multiple R&D projects in the areas listed above.
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels.
  • Work with customers independently or in teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

 

 Basic Qualifications:

 

  • A Ph.D. in computer and electrical engineering, computer science, networking or a directly related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in design, analysis, implementation and experimentation for capability networking beyond Ph.D.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Five or more years of networking work experience at a tertiary institution or in an appropriate industry, university or government laboratory.
  • Independent research competence as demonstrated by national and/or international peer-reviewed publications and a sustained publication record.
  • Experience in software and hardware networking design, implementation and testing.
  • Experience with physical networking devices and connections, including switches, routers and hosts.
  • Familiarity with and implementation of cybersecurity best practices.
  • Experience with network virtualization and software defined networking (SDN) methods, including mininet, containernet and GNS frameworks;
  • Experience with python and high-level programming frameworks for capability networking implementation.
  • Experience with machine learning methods and frameworks for capability networking implementation.
