Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate conducts state-of-the-art research and development in computing and computational sciences in support of DOE's missions and programs. We develop and deploy

leading edge computing and information technology capabilities to keep computational sciences at a level comparable to experimental sciences in the pursuit of scientific discovery and technical innovation.


The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics group is seeking a senior computational scientist to aide in the verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of large-scale compressible flow simulation codes for the purpose of assessing and improving the predictive capability of these codes. 


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Interact with code developers, engineered systems analysts, and experimentalists to understand sensitivities of simulation code implementation choices, code use choices, and experimental uncertainties for the purpose of assessing and improving the the predictive capability of simulation codes.
  • Interact with sponsors to define, execute, and report on relevant project elements.
  • Actively collaborate with domain experts from U.S. government laboratories and academia involved in similar efforts.
  • Publish high quality research results in peer-reviewed open or classified journals and conferences, if so authorized by the sponsoring agency.
  • Present non-sensitive research in professional journals and conferences.
  • Develop proposals and work statements for funding, with ability to manage work scope and deliverables to sponsors


Basic  Qualifications:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering or related field and 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • R&D experience outside of a Ph.D. in the areas of computational fluid dynamics for compressible, reacting flows.
  • Demonstrated experience with the development of large-scale massively parallel simulation codes for compressible flow using high-order methods.
  • Demonstrated experience with the verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification of large-scale simulation codes to assess predictive capability.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant professional R&D experience outside of Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated mastery of modern software development and quality practices.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a production level software development team.
  • Strong computational skills, including programming in C++, and programming for performance portability on modern heterogeneous high performance computing architectures.
  • Experience with the application of automatic differentiation in computational fluid dynamics codes.
  • A proven publication track record.
  • A proven record of successful proposal development.
  • Excellent communication (spoken and written), strategic planning, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated prior leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the ASC V&V program at the national level


Special Requirements:

  • It is required of this position the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
