The Modern Nuclear I&C (MNIC) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a full-time staff member with to work in the area of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for fission energy systems. In this role, you will be expected to lead and collaborate with scientists, within the group as well as within Oak Ridge National Laboratory, on a variety of inter-disciplinary research projects.

Specific areas of research interest in fission energy systems include:

  • Machine-learning (ML) algorithms, including reinforcement learning algorithms, for optimizing operation, including sensor and component health monitoring, anomaly detection and fault isolation and prediction and system control
  • Physics-informed AI applied to nuclear energy problems, including the interface between AI and traditional modeling and simulation and theory
  • Integrate physics-informed ML algorithms with uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation analyses and develop methods for explainable AI/ML in high-consequence applications such as control systems
  • Statistics and data analytics, especially computational statistics and the ability to deal with sparse or missing data.


Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality basic and applied research in AI-enabled and statistical methods for monitoring and control of complex engineered systems
  • Develop and apply both first-principles and data-driven analysis techniques, and integrate with uncertainty quantification and propagation analyses
  • In collaboration with staff in NEFCD and other divisions, contribute to the development of proposals and perform research in machine learning and statistical analysis for optimizing operations of advanced nuclear energy systems.
  • Communicate research results to internal and external stakeholders through journal and conference articles and technical reports and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Collaborate with researchers inside and outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors


Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in nuclear, mechanical, or electrical engineering or a related field
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation and scientific writing) that enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors


Preferred Qualifications

  • Scholarly record that demonstrates results-oriented problem-solving skills, and a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of engineering problems
  • The ability to conduct independent and significant research and a demonstrated research capability with a publication record in AI/ML applications in nuclear energy problems,
  • Strong understanding of the underlying mathematics of control methods for dynamic systems
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior levels of sponsor management and others involved in technical endeavors,
  • Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to AI and ML,
  • A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories,
  • Demonstrated ability to work in flexible research assignments,
  • Experience mentoring students and/or postdocs.
