Overview:   

We are seeking a Cyber Security Research Scientist who will focus on data science applied to cyber security challenges of national importance.  This position resides in the Cyber Security Research (CYR) Group in the Cyber and Applied Data Analytics Division in the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 

 

 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

  • Contribute to and lead cryptography and privacy research to help solve challenges in energy policy, cyber security data sharing, healthcare, and other fields of interest to the DOE
  • Develop cryptographic primitives for security research problems of interest to DOE and other ORNL sponsors
  • Developing proposals and standards for novel research ideas led by CYR and CADA
  • Have experience in one or more areas of cryptographic research including public-key cryptography, post-quantum cryptography, lattice-based cryptography, and/or elliptic-curve cryptography
  • Have experience in applied areas of cryptography including secure multi-party computation, homomorphic encryption, attribute-based encryption, private information retrieval (PIR), and privacy-preserving technologies
  • Contribute to novel solutions to problems of national interest, and to the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions 
  • Contribute to multiple R&D projects in the cybersecurity and national security mission area 
  • Contribute to the reporting and presentation of research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels 
  • Work within ORNL teams to develop requirements and proposals, conduct research, and produce working prototypes for demonstration 
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release, including presenting at academic, government, and industry conferences or workshops 
  • Contribute to invention disclosures, transition of ORNL research to commercial use, market research, and industry/government activities to enable ORNL cybersecurity R&D’s use in practice 

 

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • A Ph.D. degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, computer engineering, or a directly related field 
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in cyber security data 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong mathematics background 
  • Research experience and publications in the cyber security domain 
  • Strong software engineering experience, including expertise in C, C++, Java, or Python 
  • Successful supervision of junior research staff and demonstrated success in research project management 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills  
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory   
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs  

 

 

Special Requirements: 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
