The Multi-Modal Analytics and Architectures (M2A2) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts research, development, and deployment of multi-modal data processing technologies to address national security and other worldwide challenges. Our core research competences are computer vision, data analytics, computational modeling, data visualization and architectures, image reconstruction, signal and image processing, electrical engineering, computer science, and mathematics. In general, M2A2’s activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for federal research sponsors. In order to broaden and strengthen M2A2 capabilities, the group seeks an expert in full motion video. The M2A2 group is accepting applications for a full-time research staff position from applicants proficient in the following technical areas: full motion video processing and analysis, photogrammetry, computer vision, and image processing. The selected candidate is expected to work closely with other team members in an Agile development framework, which includes the use of version control and high-performance computing tools. Current projects are national security focused and deal with multi-modal data such as imagery, text, radar, and geospatial. The new staff member will develop new and enhance current tools for automated analysis and visualization of large spatio-temporal multi-modal datasets.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Research and develop full motion video product processing and analysis software, which includes:
    • Detection, tracking, and quantitative evaluation of frame objects,
    • Improved geolocation of video frames,
    • Automated assessment of video quality,
    • Integration of developed software with deployed applications.
  • Research and develop software and algorithms for general multi-modal data collection and analysis
  • Provide the Multi-Modal Analytics and Architectures group and the projects’ principal investigators with materials and results for technical proposals, white papers, news articles, technical papers and sponsor reports.
  • Stay current with latest machine learning, full motion video, signal and image processing techniques.
  • Participate in organizations related to motion imagery standards including MISB and relevant working groups.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • PhD or Masters with a strong record of research and development in computer vision, photogrammetry, image processing, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or closely related field where full motion video processing capability is emphasized
  • 2+ years of work experience in related technical space
  • Demonstrated experience conceiving and executing research and development projects
  • Substantial programming skills in language such as C/C++ and Python
  • Substantial experience in the implementation of image processing algorithms
  • Ability to access export-controlled data and tools without requiring export control license*

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience with real-time processing
  • Experience with GIS software suite e.g. ArcGIS, ENVI, SOCET GXP, QGIS, …
  • Experience in working with format such as NITF, GeoTIFF, and libraries like GDAL, NITRO, etc.
  • Substantial experience with motion imagery standard such as KVL, Geo-Registration Local Set, etc.

 

Special Requirement:

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
