Research Group Overview:

The Augmented Analyst Intelligence (A2I) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) performs R&D that will augment an analyst’s accuracy, effectiveness, speed, confidence, and ability to process large amounts of multi-modal data sources via the creation of advanced data science, information visualization, augmented/virtual reality, synergistic human-machine intelligence methods, and human-computer-interface technologies. We often work closely with domain experts in the project space; this includes soliciting requirements, getting feedback on features, and deploying into operational environments. In general, A2I's activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for national security sponsors. Job Description:

To support ORNL mission and strengthen our group’s capabilities, A2I invites applications for the position of R&D staff member in Software Engineering. The interdisciplinary nature of the projects within the group incorporate methods and techniques from the fields of machine learning, computer vision, image processing, natural language processing, data visualization, and other areas.

The new group member will employ agile development methodologies, version control, and different computing platforms for processing of multi-modal data, such as images, video, text, sound, and other sensing data. The new member will research and develop algorithms and systems for the acquisition, processing and matching of human biometrics. The developed solutions will be deployed for operational use by our national security sponsors.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development of software in variety of domains to enhance national security
  • Development of software to acquire, process, enhance, analyze, and present data
  • Support infrastructure and tooling to deploy software to operational environments
  • Support A2I staff in the development of ideas, white papers, and proposals
  • Help disseminate impactful results through documentation of code deliveries, open-/ or closed-source copyrights, academic publications, technical reports, and presentations both informally (e.g., in internal meetings) and formally to sponsors or research peers (e.g., conferences)
  • Mentor junior software engineers
  • Maintain and encourage a work environment of mutual respect and collaboration

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS with 8-15 years of experience
  • MS with 7-12 years of experience
  • PhD with 2-5 years of experience

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
  • Programming skills in C, C++, Python, or Golang
  • Have a deep understanding of Computer Science fundamentals, including algorithms and data structures
  • Be passionate about software engineering with a strong sense of ownership for the code that you and your team write
  • Have a desire to always learn new techniques, tools, and processes
  • Maintain high quality, maintainable coding standards for yourself and your team
  • Demonstrated skill in time management and completing software projects in a cooperative team environment
  • This position requires ability to get a US Clearance*

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Git or other version control tools
  • Experience with CMake or other cross-platform build tools
  • Experience with GitLab or other continuous integration/continuous deployment tools
  • Experience with containers, Kubernetes, and other deployment and orchestration tools
  • Experience with artificial intelligence, machine learning, or natural language processing
  • Experience with image processing or computer vision
