Overview

The Cybersecurity Research Group in the National Security Sciences Directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for professional researchers of any level (post-bachelors through senior staff) with expertise in data science, statistics, machine learning, and/or applied math to support a diverse team of cybersecurity researchers, software engineers, mathematicians with parsing, analyzing, visualizing and overall leveraging data.

 

The Cybersecurity Research Group designs, develops, and delivers innovative research solutions that either apply or test applications of data science for cybersecurity. Projects frequently involve collaboration across scientific disciplines, and result in publications, prototypes, and technology transfer to both government and commercial uses. Recent examples include the following: the development of a machine-learning-driven solution for emulation  that creates realistic experimental environments for network security tools; a study of analysts to design a mathematical simulations of operators use of their tools; and the statistical evaluation of data from large-scale experiments.

 

 

 

Position Description

The group seeks an innovative thinker with data science skills to assist a diverse team with creating and leveraging data involved with cybersecurity research and development (R&D) projects. The position will work in teams of professional computer scientists, cybersecurity experts, mathematicians, an software engineers to deliver innovative solutions and large scale experiments in the enterprise and sometimes cyber physical domains. Large scale experiments create multi-modal data that is collected in databases (e.g,. Elasticsearch, Splunk, SQL), while smaller projects create datasets stored locally. This position will work with other team members to parse, analyze, visualize, and overall make the most of data involved with experiments. Additionally, learning, designing, and implementing machine learning techniques,  mathematical simulations, or other algorithmic solutions to real-world problems will be fun, challenging, and interdisciplinary tasks involved in this position.  Implementation of data pipelines, experiments to inform efficacy of methods, and rapid learning of background methods is expected.

 

The ideal candidate will be self-disciplined, have a strong work ethic, and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems. Some education and/or experience with statistical techniques, supervised and unsupervised machine learning and related concepts, numerical analysis is required. Similarly, some education and/or experience with data pipelines (cleaning/quality control, parsing, algorithmic implementation, visualization in plots and tables, etc.) is required. The ability and desire to learn necessary concepts of the cybersecurity domain as needed is required.

 

The researcher will be expected to support dissemination of results through presentations, posters, academic publications, and technical reports. The researcher will contribute to development of proposals for future research. The researcher would take responsibility for subtasks requiring data analytic skills, find innovative approaches for them, and deliver solutions to support the teams’ goals.  

 

 

 

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field
  • A strong grasp of numerical linear algebra, probability theory, algorithms, and mathematical analysis
  • Proficiency or ability to become quickly proficient in:
    • Python, especially Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, and visualization libraries,
    • Basics of supervised and unsupervised machine learning,
    • Linux/Unix platforms,
    • LaTeX, and
    • Git
  • Strong technical writing skills and desire to publish in high-caliber academic venues   
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills   
  • Ability to give clear and engaging presentations of research for both technical and non-technical audiences  
  • Passion for continued learning and development of job-related skills
  • A desire to work in a team environment both learning from and teaching those with other backgrounds to facilitate interdisciplinary research

 

 

Desired qualifications 

  • A proven record of technical research skills and the desire to apply these skills to the national security domain 
  • US Q or TS Clearance  
  • Cybersecurity research background 
  • Experience with enterprise security operation (SOCs)

 

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
