STS Design Services Manager

Overview:    

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Design Services Manager for the Second Target Station (STS) Project in the Neutron Upgrades Project Office. The STS Design Services Manager is responsible for the 3D CAD model and drawing development for the STS and manages a centralized group of designers for the project. This position is a key role in the project and is responsible for the quality of its design output. 

The Neutron Upgrades Project Office supports major capital projects for Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Neutron Scattering Research programs, including the Second Target Station Project. The Second Target Station Project is a ~$2 billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come. The STS will be capable of supporting 18 to 20 individual neutron scattering instruments (beamlines), each of which transports neutrons from the source to a shielded end station which houses a user-provided sample along with a suite of detectors.  

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

• Leads day-to-day operations of the Design Services group, including a centralized team of designers and the drawing checking team 

• Owns the project’s top-level technical integrated CAD model (non-Conventional Facilities) 

• Manages CAD and PLM/PDM software licenses for STS and serves as liaison to the Information Technology Services Directorate (ITSD) 

• Coordinates with engineering managers to ensure software license availability and oversees software procurement 

• Establishes and maintains 3D CAD and drafting standards for STS 

• Leads the STS Creo User Group 

• Serves as a key technical partner to STS Engineering managers 

• Promotes a high-quality design culture through adherence to STS Engineering standards and best modeling practices

Basic Qualifications: 

• An AS degree in an engineering related field with at least 15 years of experience in 3D CAD design of complex technical systems 

• An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered instead of an AS degree 

• Advanced proficiency with Creo 

• Strong working knowledge of drafting standards and technical drawing principles 

• Demonstrated experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), with formal training 

• Experience communicating design concepts to engineers and designers 

• Occasional travel required 

 Preferred Qualifications: 

• Proficiency in Windchill PLM 

• Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment 

• Expert level knowledge of GD&T 

• Experience collaborating with engineers and designers on large assemblies (thousands to ten thousand+ parts and subassemblies)
