The Second Target Station (STS) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Piping and Mechanical Designer to join our Target Systems team.

As a Designer on the STS project, you will play a crucial role in the objective to build the world’s highest brightness neutron science facility.  You will have the opportunity to work with a dedicated and accomplished team of professionals and contribute to groundbreaking research in a variety of fields, including energy production and storage, medical advancements, and environmental studies.  You will have access to professional development opportunities and a supportive community of colleagues who share your passion for innovation and discovery.  Join us as we build the best possible research facility for ORNL and the research community.

The STS consists of individuals with different backgrounds and expertise.  We believe that diversity and inclusion are essential to the success of the project, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and identities.  Learn more at https://diversity.ornl.gov/.

Overview:

The STS Piping and Mechanical Designer is responsible for development of designs for Target Systems components, many of which are first-of-a-kind or one-of-a-kind.  Specifically, the position will be responsible for the design of piping systems and components, producing high quality engineering design packages, and reviewing and checking the work of peer designers.  This role reports to the STS Target Systems Interface Systems Group Leader, takes direction from and supports the work of Target Systems Lead Engineers and interfaces with engineers, scientists, and other designers across and outside the project.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build, specializing in piping systems

  • Successfully communicate and collaborate with engineers and scientists throughout the design process

  • Create engineering models and drawings in Creo/Windchill using Spec-Driven Piping (SDP)

  • Prepare clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions

  • Produce multi-system installation drawings and specifications

  • Check detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards

  • Work with the document control group to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings

  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications (we strongly encourage candidates to apply if they meet these qualifications):

  • Associate degree in an engineering discipline.  An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered instead of an Associate degree.

  • 5+ years of experience in design of complex piping and mechanical systems

  • At least 2 years of experience using Creo/Pro-E for the design of piping systems. Extensive experience with other CAD packages will be considered in lieu of Creo/ProE experience.

  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards

  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Ability to communicate design concepts effectively to engineers and other designers

Preferred Qualifications (relevant but not required for consideration; interested candidates should apply even if they do not meet these qualifications):

  • Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment

  • Experience designing with Creo skeletons

  • Experience working in a team environment with engineers and other designers working together on large assemblies comprised of thousands of parts and subassemblies

  • Experience with schematics, PFDs and P&IDs

  • Experience in weldment design and American Welding Society (AWS) symbology

  • Experience in communicating with vendors and fabricators

About the Second Target Station Project:

The STS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).  The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.  See http://neutrons.ornl.gov/sts for more information.
