We have an opening for a Security Police Officer I in support of the Laboratory Protection Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In this role you will work with a team of security professionals in providing defensive protection of personnel, property and other assets against theft or sabotage at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Our diverse capabilities span a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the egress and ingress of vehicles and/or property entering or leaving the site.

  • Patrol and protect facilities to deter or prevent illegal/unauthorized activities.

  • Respond in an effective, aggressive and timely manner to safeguards and security alarms, infractions, and emergencies.

  • Enforce applicable rules and regulations regarding exclusion of prohibited articles, trespass or demonstrations, etc.

  • Report any violation of security, property or safety concern.

  • Safely maintain and operate all assigned and required firearms.

  • Granted federal arrest authority.

  • Provide escorts for personnel and special nuclear material.

  • Maintain qualification and proficiency with all assigned equipment.

  • Patrol the ORNL site by vehicle or by foot.

  • Understand and implement departmental and site policies and procedures governing post and patrol operations and access control systems.

  • Understand and implement inspection techniques for persons, packages and vehicles, as well as detect and identify prohibited articles and site-specific security interests.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all applicable security orders, federal laws and DOE orders.

  • Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a quesionsing attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of five years of military and/or law enforcement experience.

  • Be at least 21 years of age.

  • Obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Able to meet DOE physical fitness standards as required by 10 CFR part 1046 of Advanced Readiness Standard (ARS) including a one mile run with a maximum qualifying time of eight minutes and 30 seconds and a 40-yard prone-to-running dash with maximum qualifying time of 8.0 seconds and any other measure of physical readiness necessary to perform site-specific essential functions.

  • Able to complete, obtain, and maintain all certifications for all training requirements, such as firearms, use of force, defensive tactics, etc.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-security clearance and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position and HRP position. WSAP and HRP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an on-going random drug and alcohol testing program as well as annual psychological assessments.

  • Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in a security or related field.

  • Experience working with security organization, law enforcement agency, military or emergency response organization is highly desired.
