Overview:
The Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is seeking an expert Electrical Engineer to fill a role located in the Electrical Engineering Group within the Site Services Section. NTD is one of four divisions within the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The Site Services Section provides project management, engineering services, facilities maintenance, and construction across ORNL’s Chestnut Ridge locations.
The Electrical Engineering Group produces a broad portfolio of work products for various ORNL internal customers. Possible services include operation and maintenance of power distribution/utilization (13.8kV to 120V), electrical design services for various customers in the Neutron Sciences Directorate including conventional facilities and experimental equipment, construction oversight for related projects, and facility maintenance.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for operation and maintenance of the Chestnut Ridge electrical distribution system, with focus on the site medium voltage distribution, unit substations and emergency generators.

Coordinate with operations, electrical utilities, and engineering staff to ensure reliable operation of electrical equipment.

Develop and implement preventative maintenance procedures for electrical equipment.

Coordinate planned power outages with operations and research staff to support maintenance and installation activities.

Provide technical field support and inspections for installation and maintenance activities.

Recommend and design improvements to existing electrical infrastructure to enhance system reliability.

Support/Perform procurement of equipment and services including developing technical specifications and reviewing submittals.

Maintain existing and perform new arc flash analyses through data collection, preparation of SKM models, reports, and printing equipment labels.

Develop technical design documents including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for new construction, facility modifications and improvements.

Work closely with electrical designers to produce design change notice packages and drawings for facility upgrades.

Collaborate with other fields during the design process to ensure constructability and operability of integrated systems.

Review designs produced by subcontractor Architect/Engineer (A/E) firms, including equipment selection.

Oversee and periodically inspect installations to ensure they meet design criteria and applicable codes and standards.

Provide technical feedback to support repair and replacement of electrical equipment including motors, variable frequency drives, electrical distribution, transfer, and protection equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

A BS degree in electrical engineering or related field with at least 10 years of proven experience.

Knowledge of the technical concepts of electrical engineering principles, codes, and standards.

Demonstrated experience in design and specification of medium voltage power distribution systems, industrial low voltage power distribution systems and associated distribution equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Registered Professional Engineer (PE).

Proficiency using SKM Power Tools for Arc Flash calculations.

Experience with design and construction projects.

Familiarity with AutoCAD/Revit.
-
Experience working at a DOE national laboratory.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.
